What works in horror right now
Horror lives on atmosphere and pacing, not on effects. The channels that keep viewers to the end open with the strangest detail of the story, hold the reveal back, and use silence and slow zooms where a weaker video would add jump scares. A recurring narrator helps: viewers come back for the voice as much as for the story.
Original stories, or real cases retold with your own research and structure, travel further than readings of famous creepypastas that hundreds of channels have already covered. Chapter cards (“Night one”, “Three hours later”) make long episodes feel organized and give YouTube chapters to show.
Your first video, step by step
- Write a 6–10 minute story with one clear turning point.
- Record your voice and open Whisper in the forest scene.
- Add the discretion card, a time-skip card and chapter cards in your editor.
- End with the end screen pointing to your next story.
5 ideas for your first month
- The night-shift guard who found a door that wasn't on the building plans.
- Three short campfire stories, each one ending in the same small town.
- A real unsolved disappearance, retold with a timeline and the open questions.
- Rules for a job nobody should take: an episodic story in five parts.
- Viewer-submitted encounters, rewritten and narrated with permission.
Mistakes that cost horror channels their monetization
- Reading other people's stories word for word over stock footage. YouTube treats reused content without significant original commentary as ineligible, even with the author's permission.
- Uploading the same template every day with only the text changed. Since July 2025 YouTube calls this “inauthentic content”: repetitive or mass-produced videos.
- Skipping the warning card when a story includes violence or disturbing details. A viewer discretion card at the start sets expectations and is part of the genre.

Questions
- Can a faceless horror channel be monetized?
- Yes, if the stories and the narration are yours and each video brings something new. Mass-produced or reused stories are not eligible under YouTube's monetization policies.
- Do I need to label an animated narrator as AI?
- YouTube asks creators to disclose realistic altered or synthetic content. A clearly animated cartoon narrator is not realistic, so it doesn't need that label.
- How long should horror videos be?
- Many horror channels publish 8–20 minute episodes plus Shorts with the hook of the story. Start with what you can finish well every week.
