What a hook has to do

The first seconds of a video decide whether people stay. A hook doesn't need to be clever; it needs to make one promise the rest of the video keeps: an answer to a question, the explanation of a strange fact, the end of a story, the number one of a list. If the promise is vague, viewers leave; if the video doesn't keep it, they leave later and don't come back.

That's why these formulas are built around a specific topic, a specific number and a specific audience. “5 things about saving money” is forgettable; “5 things about saving $100 a month that sound fake but aren't” makes a promise.

Six kinds of hook, and when to use each

Questions work when the answer isn't obvious. Shocking facts work when you can prove them in the next sentence. “Nobody tells you” hooks work for advice and insider knowledge. Countdowns and lists work when each item stands on its own. Stories work for horror, true crime and history, where the tension is the content. Mistake hooks work for tutorials, because everyone wants to avoid looking foolish.

Mix them up across a channel. If every video opens with a question, regular viewers stop noticing the questions.

Why no AI

Formulas you can read are easier to adapt than text a model writes for you: you see the structure, keep the rhythm and change the words to sound like you. Every line here is a template written by a person, with your words dropped in. Treat them as a starting point, then read the result out loud — if it sounds stiff, shorten it.

Hear it before you record it

A hook can look fine on paper and fall flat out loud. “Say it” opens our talking character studio with the line already in the teleprompter, using the character that fits your niche — a narrator for horror, a detective for true crime, a stoic statue for philosophy. Read it with your voice and watch the character speak it before you commit to a full script.

Questions

Is this hook generator really free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with hand-written formulas, so there's nothing to pay for and no account needed.
Does it use AI?
No. Every hook comes from a formula written by a person; the tool only fills in your topic, number and audience.
How long should a YouTube hook be?
Usually one or two sentences — something you can say in five to ten seconds. Use our script length calculator to check.
Can I use these hooks for Shorts?
Yes. Short, concrete hooks work especially well on Shorts, where viewers decide even faster.
