Lower Third Templates for DaVinci Resolve — Transparent .mov

Resolve's own lower thirds are Fusion titles, and changing their animation means opening Fusion, which is a whole program to learn. These are finished animations you fill in from the browser: name, role, side, color and style. You export a ProRes 4444 .mov with a transparent background and Resolve treats it as a normal clip on Video 2, in the free version as well as Studio.

Nothing to render inside Resolve, no nodes, and the same strap looks identical every time it appears.

How to add it in DaVinci Resolve

  1. 1. Fill it in and export

Open a template below, type the name and the role, set the side and the distance from the bottom, and export without background. One file per speaker.

  2. 2. Import into the Media Pool

On the Edit page, import the .mov files into the Media Pool (Ctrl+I on Windows, Cmd+I on Mac, or drag them in from your folder).

  3. 3. Place it on Video 2

Drag the strap onto Video 2, above your footage on Video 1, a beat after the person starts speaking.

  4. 4. If you see black

Right-click the clip in the Media Pool → Clip Attributes → Alpha Mode: Premultiplied. Your footage now shows through.

  5. 5. Reuse and adjust

Copy the strap (Ctrl+C / Cmd+C), move the playhead to the person's next appearance and paste (Ctrl+V / Cmd+V), checking it lands on Video 2. To move or resize it, use Transform in the Inspector.

Resolve's free version decodes ProRes, so you don't need Studio for these files. If playback stutters on a slower computer, lower the timeline playback resolution while editing; the final render is unaffected.

Questions

Do I need DaVinci Resolve Studio?
No. The free version imports ProRes 4444 .mov files and keeps the transparency. Studio isn't required for anything on this page.
Why does the lower third look black in Resolve?
Resolve didn't apply the alpha channel. Set Clip Attributes → Alpha Mode to Premultiplied on that clip and the background disappears.
Do I need After Effects?
No. Every template is edited in your browser: type your text, choose colors and format (16:9, 9:16 or 1:1), watch the live preview and export.
What do I export, and does it work in my editor?
Most templates export as a ProRes 4444 .mov with a transparent background, which you place on a track above your clip in CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro. You can also export an MP4 with your own clip behind it. Always in Full HD.
Is it free?
Editing and previewing are free and need no account. To export you sign in with Google; during the open beta, new accounts get export credits at no cost.
